The Cycle of «TROIS CHANSONS, TRISTES ?»  for a cappella mixed choir and lyrics of Paul Verlaine had been composed between December 2002 and January 2003. The interrogation sign presents in the title Cycle means to insinuate the ambiguous character of these three ‘Chansons’ in which I indeed intent to present the sorrow and melancholy of the Verlaines poems, but dressing them up with a personal touch of irony. There is nothing healthier than laughing the own grief, there is nothing healthier than to put distance between our low feelings and oneself, than to turn the grave and heavy into slight and light...

In ‘CHANSON D’AUTOMNE’ this duality sad-hilarious, grave-tiny is going to be underline and the drama is going to be open out, stretch out, is going to be loosing weight… ma non tropo… the Verlaine lyrics set me a limit.  The last ‘Chanson’ and the entire Cycle will end with an open ‘morte’ that wishes to highlight this paradox presents all over the “Trois Chansons”.

Blessent mon coeur

D'une langueur

Monotone.

Tout suffocant

Et blême, quand

Sonne l'heure,

Je me souviens

Des jours anciens

Et je pleure

Et je m'en vais

Au vent mauvais

Qui m'emporte

Deçà, delà,

Pareil à la

Feuille morte.

Paul Verlaine

Inconsolable winds

bring violins,

and autumn's part

is monotonous

and languorous,

pain to the heart.

Suffocating, pale

halting and stale,

slowly hours creep,

gather and fall.

So I recall

past days and weep.

Tossed this way

and that as winds may,

one with the grief.

Hither and yon,

carried and gone:

dead the leaf.
